Craig Turney / Owner-Operator
Craig is a Red Seal carpenter (certificate #K03121178), timber framer, and general contractor.
After graduating from the University of British Columbia with a BA in anthropology, Craig spent some time working odd-jobs and travelling abroad before deciding to follow the family tradition and become a builder.
His apprenticeship was spent in Victoria working for construction companies that continually prioritized profit over craftsmanship and environmental responsibility. Convinced there was a better way to run a business, Craig started Turney Carpentry in 2019.
In 2022 he made the move to qathet, where he enjoys spending as much time as possible exploring the region's beautiful forests, mountains, lakes, and ocean.
Craig is a member of the Timber Framers Guild, and currently working toward obtaining his BC residential builder license.

JP Doucet / Lead Carpenter
Before joining Turney Carpentry, JP ran a one man cabinetry and renovation business, JP Doucet Woodworking & Carpentry. Starting his career as a furniture maker, over the past decade he has managed to work with wood in nearly every capacity. Alternatively he has worked as a sawyer, timber framer, cabinet maker, and a custom boat builder.
Social and environmental policy
We strive to create an inclusive environment that is safe and welcoming for everyone, client and workers alike. We are a living wage employer and have a zero tolerance policy for any form of hate or discrimination.
The construction industry is one of the largest contributors to municipal waste - Statistics Canada estimates that the construction industry generates about 4 million tonnes of waste annually. Of that waste only 16% was reused or recycled, while the remaining 84% was disposed of in landfills.
As builders, we have an outsized impact and a responsibility to minimize the waste we generate. We divert waste on our job sites by recycling and donating reusable items. Our in-depth knowledge on the environmental impacts of material selection and design can help further reduce the environmental footprint of your project.

Cost-Plus pricing

We operate under a "Cost-Plus" contract, which we've found to be the best arrangement for both the client and contractor.
What it means, is that we charge for time and materials plus a fixed percentage to cover management, overhead, and profit. We keep detailed timesheets and share all receipts for expenses incurred.
If you're interested in reading more, this article does a great job of explaining the advantages of a Cost-Plus model.
Our standard rates are:
- $75/hr (+GST) for a general contractor
- $65/hr (+GST) for a lead carpenter
- $40-55/hr (+GST) for an apprentice carpenter (depending on experience)
- 15% markup on material and subcontracted labour. Copies of receipts are included with weekly invoices.
Additionally, please inquire, as we offer a discounted rate for non-profits and projects that benefit the community.
